But now, in the Internet, quite another version seems widespread: it is Olesha who first coined the expression and then Stalin “plagiarized” it. I found that it is due to the literary anecdote which Yuri Borev recorded based on what he heard from Viktor Shklovsky in 1971. This episode was included in Borev’s collection of Stalin folklore Staliniada (1990) and later misled many people who took it for its face value.\n What Olesha offered as a definition of the task of the writer in the Soviet age was “an engineer of human material.” By comparing Olesha’s short story “The Human Material” (1929) and Zelinsky’s memoirs, I came to the conclusion that, although the formulas of Olesha and Stalin are similar in their phrasing, they are quite different in content and it is not probable that Stalin should have borrowed the formula from Olesha.\n I agree with Omry Ronen who demonstrated, by exploring extensively the avant-garde context which prepared Stalin’s expression, that it is rather Mayakovsky’s Mystery-Bouffе that was “plagiarized” by Stalin. In the end of my essay I also added one more new finding by Viktoriya Faibyshenko, who discovered that the French “decadent” writer Huysmans used a similar expression “un ingénieur savant de l'âime in his novel À rebours.
