It occurs only a few times in the Rig Veda and is of more frequent occurrence in the Middle Vedic literature. In this article, I argue that the word has been commonly misunderstood as having either a term with an ethico-moral sense (‘sin’) or a negative sense (‘offence’). However, a more coherent and convincing case can be made that the word kilbiṣa carries the positive meaning of ‘obligation, responsibility’. Passages from several Middle Vedic texts bear out this interpretation.
