内容記述 | This study deals with the two unproductive suffixes -AA and -GA in Khalkha Mongolian, which derive transitive verbs from intransitive ones. Our primary aim is to provide a list of verbs that include these two suffixes (hereafter, "AA verbs" and "GA verbs," respectively). The list was prepared according to the following procedure. First, we created a .txt file with the all headings in the Mongolian-English Dictionary compiled by Charles Bawden (1997). Then, we extracted candidates for AA verbs and GA verbs by utilizing grep and manually eliminated the irrelevant items. Using the list obtained from this procedure, the present study shows the semantic distribution of AA verbs and GA verbs. AA verbs include more verbs expressing changes of mental or body status than GA verbs do. Many GA verbs, on the other hand, express physical changes of substance. This semantic characteristic of GA verbs can be explained, at least partially, by the fact that Mongolian has various intransitive verbs formed by attaching the derivational suffix -s, -d, or -t to adjectives. These intransive verbs with -s, -d, or -t express the meaning "(for a substance) to possess the property expressed by the base adjective." When they are transitivized, the attachment of -GA rather than -AA is favored. Consequently, more than a few GA verbs are derived that donate "to cause to possess the property (expressed by the base of -s, -d, or -t)," that is, a "physical change of substance." This can be considered one of the reasons GA verbs include many verbs expressing a physical change of substance.
