On May 9, 1974, at 8.33 a.m most people in Tokai, Kantoand central areas of Japan felt a strong earthquake which originated off the southern end of the Izu Peninsula. The epicenter, as determined by the Japan Meteorological Agency, was lat. 34°34'N, long. 138°48'E and depth 10km. The seismic magnitude was reported as 6.9. This earthquake occurred near the site of the North Izu Earthquake of Nov. 26 1930, which was located about 60km north.
