ECEC teachers are considered to develop creative practical knowledges though the learning processes of realizing and overcoming challenges and problems which are faced in their practice. Dialogues and collaborations with other teachers often facilitate the learning processes. This paper introduces pattern languages as a new tool for supporting these learning processes of ECEC teachers.
First, the previous research findings and challenges on practical knowledges of ECEC teachers are reviewed. Second, pattern languages are introduced. Third, the possibility of pattern languages for visualizing and sharing practical knowledges of ECEC teachers is considered. Fourth, the “ECEC Chief Teacher Patterns” project is explained. Finally, the future directions of pattern languages for ECEC practice are discussed.
