This paper aimed; 1) to determine the term “ECEC middle leader” based on Japanese law and policy; 2) to overview international and domestic research on the practice of ECEC middle leadership; and then 3) to consider Japanese ECEC middle leader’s recognition on their work through empirical research.\n First, through the review on international and domestic research on ECEC middle leadership, the concept of distributed leadership was critically examined and the new concept “hybrid leadership” was introduced to elucidate the role and practice of ECEC middle leaders. Second, as for empirical research, the difference of director’s leadership and middle leader’s leadership and their impact on process quality was examined based on a nation-wide questionnaire implemented in 2015.
