内容記述 | This article reviews English and Scandinavian literature on children and young people’s participation. The body of English literature reveals that school councils, youth councils, and youth parliaments reflect issues of representative democracy: hierarchy of the structure, tokenistic hearing process, and elite-oriented representation with the negative perspective of children and young people as an uncomplete citizen. The Scandinavian literature shows even though Scandinavian countries regard children and young people as citizens to participate in decision making, they are facing the same issues concerning with the issues of representation and communication. The new styles of political participation in which various kinds of participation exist, indicate possibilities of overcoming issues of instrumental participation above. In conclusion, further research is required to examine what style of participation realizes children and young people’s decision making to have a real influence on their daily lives, connecting to the public policy. The way of participation reflects the style of democracy in the country. So when we build a structure and theory of children and young people’s participation, we need to reconsider our democracy. |
