| 内容記述 | This article deals with the so-called "locative alternation" in German, focusing on the semantic function of unseparable prefixes such as durch- (through), uber- (over), um- (around), and unter- (under). These prefixes, which are often combined with simplex transitive verbs and make this alternation possible, have locational meanings and are generally viewed as related to morphologically and semantically identical prepositions. I argue, however, that this view is quite misleading, and show that the locative alternation in German can be better understood if we take these prefixes as an adverbial modifier specifying the result state of the semantic structures of the complex verbs. This new approach then enables us to give a unified analysis of this alternation, including those verbs with the applicative prefix be- as well as those which exhibit the same alternation without taking any prefixes on them. | |||||
