内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The presence of disabled parents has been overlooked in Japanese society so far. In other words, people with disabilities have been treated only as care-receivers and not as care-givers. This paper illustrates how parents with disabilities deal with social prejudice and the shortage of appropriate information, by means of interviews with deaf parents and participant observation of their peer meetings. What the qualitative research to deaf parents made clear was that many of them had anxieties about miscommunication with their hearing children and sought useful information to help solve this problem through contact with other deaf parents and with hearing adults who had been raised in deaf households. Deaf parents also wanted to let their children make friends with their peers so that the children might be able to share their experience of being raised by deaf parents. Although child-rearing by deaf parents thus includes specific issues of language and communication, this paper also reviews the "dominant story" in which many people are concerned about the parenting skills of disabled parents. By introducing the concept of a "social model" of disability, it reveals that part of the hardship such parents experience is actually created not by their impairment itself but by people's attitude within society. From these discussions, this paper goes on to propose a support system to help disabled people fulfil their role as parents.
