COVID-19 spread worldwide in the first half of 2020, resulting in “pandemic”. The spread of COVID-19 has had an impact on early childhood education and care (ECEC) in many ways, according to domestic and international surveys. In this paper, we first summarize the situation of COVID -19 in Japan and overseas, focusing on ECEC. Then, we reviewed what effects of COVID-19 are being considered in domestic and international surveys, including those conducted by the Center for Early Childhood Development, Education and Policy Research, to which the authors belong. The findings indicate that the conditions associated with COVID-19 affected the overall ecological system of ECEC both domestically and internationally. In particular, based on the results of the domestic survey, this paper summarizes the main contents that are shown in common for (1) ECEC practice, (2) management in ECEC settings, (3) relationship with families, and (4) measures taken by national and local governments. As future issues, it was pointed out that the long-term impact of the situation related to COVID-19 on children’s development should be examined, the purpose and value of ECEC practice and events that had to be changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic should be reviewed and examined, and the measures taken by national and local governments should be reviewed. |
