内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Theodoret, bishop of Cyrrhus in Syria, was one of excellent theologians in his age. He has also been recognized for his knowledge of classical Greek, in which he produced vast writings, even though Syriac was his mother tongue by relying on some accounts of Theodoret himself (Canivet, 1958). Canivet and some researchers consider he was master of Syriac language as a native speaker and Greek was the learned language for him. Millar (2007), however, criticized this opinion and emphasized the importance of Greek for disclosing his identity. Nevertheless, the basis of his argument rests on linguistic history in Syria and not the accounts of Theodoret himself. Thus some of the crucial issues remain unresolved. This paper aims to reconsider those accounts and to redisplay the personal portrait of Theodoret, one of the most infl uential writers in the 5th-century Mediterranean world. / The fi rst chapter contains an analysis of several accounts which, insofar as some researchers regard, relating to his native language; namely, 1) book 5 of Graecarum Affectionum Curatio, 2) Historia Religiosa, and 3) exegetical writings in the Old Testament. The opinion that these are valuable sources by which to judge the writer’s mother tongue remains doubtful. These accounts, rather, seem to show that his dominant language was Greek. Contrary to the opinion of Canivet and Guinot (1995), according to my analysis, Theodoret intentionally expressed pro-Syriac sentiments through these descriptions. / Chapter Two collates these each account in the region’s ethnolinguistic history of Syria and the career of Theodoret himself as a bishop, with presenting a more strategic image of Theodoret. In earlier sources, Theodoret emphasized his ability in and commitment to classical Greek. In accounts in the 440s, the author took the opportunity to mention pro-Syriac episodes or references in Historia Religiosa. And, after the council of Chalcedon (451), at last, he declared the Syriac language to be the oldest spoken language. This timeline corresponds to the situation of the churches in Antioch and Syria, which Cyril of Alexandria aggressively criticized during the Nestorian controversy. Through the medium of the Syriac language, he both proclaimed innocence for Syrian monastic culture as a whole and called for the help of the Antiochene episcopal faction in the Syriac world. / The problem of his mother tongue or spoken language has often attracted the attention of historians of early Christianity, studies on biblical exegesis, etc. Theodoret, however, attempted to introduce the special relationship between Syriac language and himself to classical Greek texts strategically, but not naturally, as a native speaker would. This paper demonstrates the need to consider the rhetorical strategy of this writer—who may have been a sincere person, but not neutral.
