| 内容記述 | 本稿はalong the way という表現の性質を（主にon the way との比較により）明らかにする。Alongthe way の意味は大まかには（on the way と同様に）「道のりの途中で」と記述できるが，より正確には「（長い時間のかかる）道のりの途中で」であり，along the way を使った場合には，the way の指示対象を長い時間のかかる道のりと捉える話し手の認識が示唆されることになる（この特徴はonthe way にはない）。実例に現れるalong the way の具体的な使用パターンには，(i)［somewhere alongthe way］「（長い道のりの）途中のどこかで」，(ii)［散らばった複数回の事象＋along the way］「（長い道のりの）途中で事象が大きな時間間隔をおいて複数回生じる」，(iii) ［計画していなかった事象＋along the way］「（長い道のりの）途中で計画していなかった事象が生じる」（e.g.［meet X along theway］，［there is X along the way］）などがある。これらのパターンでは，along the way 自体が持つ「長い道のり」の示唆と，along the way 以外の部分が持つ意味とが有意義な形で絡み合い，発話全体として発話意図の一貫性が保たれることになる。英語学習者がalong the way を英語母語話者と同じように使えるようになるためには，(i)-(iii) に示したものを含めalong the way よりも大きな塊を覚えること，そして，アウトプットの際にはその大きな塊の知識を参照するように心がけることが大切である。 | |||||||||

| 内容記述 | The English conventional expression along the way may at first blush seem to be synonymous with another conventional expression, on the way, in that they both locate a person or thing between the starting point and endpoint of a spatial or metaphorical path. On closer inspection, however, it turns out that the former involves a speaker construal the latter does not, in which the (spatial or metaphorical) motion is conceived to be one that takes a considerable amount of time. This speaker construal is contextually relevant in attested usage patterns. By way of illustration, consider the [MULTIPLE OCCURRENCES along the way] construction (e.g., He got shot several times along the way). It is mostly used to describe an event whose multiple occurrences are widely distributed along the (spatial or metaphorical) path in question. If they happened in rapid succession, on the way would be preferred over along the way. It is obvious that the above-mentioned speaker construal is playing a role here. Much the same goes for other usage patterns such as [somewhere along the way] and [UNPLANNED EVENT along the way]. However, this semantic aspect of along the way does not predict how the phrase is used in every respect. For instance, the fact that along the way is seldom if ever followed by a preposition (e.g. to) cannot be derived from it. Learners of English who wish to acquire a native-like command of along the way, therefore, have to learn a vast repertoire of linguistic units, all larger than the phrase itself, such as [MULTIPLE OCCURRENCES along the way], [somewhere along the way] and the like. | |||||||||
