| 内容記述 | 幕末の文久2 (1862) 年に刊行された『英和対訳袖珍辞書』の邦訳に現在からみて不可解なものがあり、先行研究で誤訳とされてきたのがある。しかし言葉の意味は時間とともに変わることがあり、往時の言葉の意味（古義）では誤訳ではなく適訳と見なせるのがある。 / 1 例を挙げると、Abolitionist の邦訳は「奴僕ヲ賣買スルヲ支ル人」であるが、これは先行研究で誤訳とされてきた。「支ル」は現在では通常「物が落ちないようにつっばりなどで支える」という意味で使うからである。しかし室町時代に日本イエズス会が編纂した長崎版『日葡辞書』によれば「支ル」は「防ぎ止める」の意味にも使われていたのが分かる。この意味なら「奴僕ヲ賣買スルヲ支ル人」は誤訳ではなく適訳である。 / このように現在では使われなくなっている古義が『英和対訳袖珍辞書』に見られることを示す。 | |||||||||

| 内容記述 | Some articles say that there are several incorrect Japanese definitions in the “Eiwa Taiyaku Shuchin Jisho” or the first commercial English-Japanese dictionary published in 1862. / However, the meaning of words may change with the time, and it turns out that those definitions are correct in their original sense; e.g., “sasaeru” stands for “to support” in current Japanese, but it meant “to protect against” in the “Nippojisho” or the Japanese-Portuguese dictionary published by the Society of Jesus in 1603. / For example, some translated Japanese definitions with “sasaeru” are considered to be incorrect in current Japanese, but they are correct in the original sense of the word. This paper is the first trial to consider the Japanese definition in the “Eiwa Taiyaku Shuchin Jisho” in the original sense of the word. | |||||||||
