The impacts of COVID-19, which has been spreading since 2020, have been continuing into 2021. In this paper, we summarize the findings of papers published by the end of August 2021 and the results of surveys conducted by the authors, and clarify the influence of COVID-19 on ECEC (early childhood education and care) facilities. As the result, actual situations and issues in ECEC were identified. First, many ECEC facilities have reconsidered their activities and events. Also, many teachers participated in online professional development while face-to-face meetings have become difficult. In the near future, it will be necessary to discuss the merits and demerits of these new initiatives and to consider new ways of ECEC. Second, although there were not many responses indicating that children are emotionally unstable, it is necessary to conduct a longitudinal survey on the influence of changes in ECEC practices on childrenʼ s development. Third, it was suggested that the disparity in measures taken by local governments, which had been an issue in 2020, continued into 2021. It is a future challenge to examine cooperation and information sharing among local governments. Based on the above considerations, it is essential that various stakeholders continue discussions about the future of ECEC. |
