In 2020, COVID-19 spread to the entire world, causing tremendous damage to many countries. Amid the pandemic, universities in various countries continue their education and research while implementing multiple infection control measures. U.S. universities have suffered one of the worldʼs most severe and enormous damages. Why do U.S. universities, which are said to be the model universities of the world, suffer such an impact? What is the nature of the impact? Our study identifies five perspectives: (1) university finances, (2) student market, (3) international student market, (4) dormitory life, and (5) college education. These perspectives not only provide a basis for looking at the impact of the COVID pandemic but are also crucial in clarifying the traditional structural characteristics of U.S. universities. This study hypothesizes that U.S. universities have been expanding their resources to provide high-quality education, research, and services by seizing various opportunities, creating internal and external markets, and skillfully combining them. These functions swung in a negative direction simultaneously under the pandemic, leading to massive damage unparalleled in other countries. On the other, problems that existed in the past have become more apparent due to the effects of COVID-19. In this paper, we discuss these points in each chapter. / The findings of this study highlight a situation of growing disparity, polarization, and shrinking opportunities for the U.S. higher education system as a whole. While it is difficult to foresee how far these serious effects will continue, we believe we have identified where the challenges are most likely to appear themselves. A more powerful U.S. model will likely emerge, with some elite institutions expanding their resources more than before. As with the social situation of the “two pandemics,” it is essential to point out that our understanding of the university may differ significantly depending on where we look in the United States. Furthermore, racial issues and the U.S.-China conflict, which co-occurred with the COVID, have already begun to have a considerable impact on the changing trends in higher education. It is necessary to continue to follow the trends in American universities. |
