内容記述 | First published in 1988, and translated into Japanese in 1998, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s“Can the Subaltern Speak?” has had a huge impact on various disciplines including the history of educational thought and the philosophy of education in Japan. The aim of this study is to reread and revaluate this text, especially from the viewpoint of performative contradiction in Spivak’s reading of Bhuvaneswari, who committed suicide while she was menstruating. On one hand, Spivak in this text rejects the assumption of the being of the pure “voice-voiceconsciousness” of Subaltern. On the other hand, it appears that Spivak has to refer to the pure “voice-consciousness” of Bhuvaneswari to critique other arbitrary reading of her and conclude that “the subaltern cannot speak”. This performative contradiction, however, is not her private “mistake” or simple “deficit”, but the inevitable contradiction of logic which enables readers to deconstruct this text. In order to show that this performative contradiction is Spivak’s strategy of deconstruction, we also refer to her other text, “Translator’s Preface” to Jacques Derrida’s “Of Grammatology”. | |||||||||
