内容記述 The purpose of this article is to review previous studies on student-engaged faculty development (FD) in Japan and to clarify its current status and challenges.
The main points clarified in this article are the following four. (1) There are several terms that represent student-engaged FD in Japan, but these terms are not always used interchangeably. (2) Studies on student-engaged FD have accumulated to some extent, and empirical studies have been conducted in recent years to verify the continuity and effectiveness of the activities. However, it is not easy for anyone other than those involved to grasp the actual status of student-engaged FD activities since the late 2010s. Especially since the spread of COVID-19, it has become difficult to grasp the actual status of activities nationwide. (3) Many organizations have difficulty in continuing the activities of student-engaged FD organizations due to the spread of COVID-19. However, many of the factors behind the stagnation of activities include issues that had existed before the COVID-19 pandemic; hence, it is necessary to devise appropriate responses after sorting out the issues’ causes. (4) In addition to further accumulation of case studies, future student-engaged FD studies are required to conduct detailed analyses focusing on important cases, such as research on the functionality of the organization with a view to diverse stakeholders in and outside of the university, to study the perspectives of students that participate, and to convey the knowledge and lessons learned to the next generation of student-engaged organizations.
