| 内容記述 | This essay focuses on the Chinese epitaph of a descendant of Saidianchi (Sayyid Ajall Shams al-Dīn, d. 1279), Na Yongjie (d. 1691), erected by his descendants at Najiaying, Yunnan Province, in 1778. It questions why this epitaph did not specify that Saidianchi was a descendant of the Prophet but implied it by using a cliché for the sages (shengren): “[He] had a mysterious and superior knowledge by nature.” Thus, this essay explores how Chinese-speaking Muslims recognized and expressed the nobility of sayyids during the Qing period. Additionally, it elucidates how the strange hint regarding Saidianchi’s honorable pedigree resulted from a strategy adopted by Na Yongjie’s descendants for their survival in China and an inner tension among them. Furthermore, it discusses how Saidianchi̶a symbol linking Chinese-speaking Muslims to the Prophet and Chinese society̶influenced the formation of their identities. | |||||||||
