| 内容記述 | This paper examines the relationship between “crises of masculinity” and the works of Japanese science fiction author Tsutsui Yasutaka. It does so through a reading of one of Tsutsui’s most well-known works of science fiction, Paprika, as well as supplementary examinations of two of his earlier short stories, “Jyoken Kokka no Hanei to Houkai,” (The Prosperity and Collapse of the Women’s Right’s Nation) and “Kutabare PTA” (Go to Hell, PTA). After a brief introduction, this paper begins with an outline of previous studies on Tsutsui Yasutaka, stressing the need for a genderfocused reading of SF, particularly one which takes into account the importance of masculinity in the genre. The third section examines the role of “masculinity in crisis” within Paprika, arguing that the actions of characters within the story often revolve around preserving traditional, gendered power structures. The fourth section compares Paprika with early representations of femininity and masculinity in two of Tsutsui’s short stories, relating them to Tsutsui’s personal experiences of “crises of masculinity.” The final section of this paper uses social and historical context to explain the stark contrast between gendered representations in Paprika and earlier works by the same author. | |||||||
