内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The Vinayapiṭaka has traditionally been studied with the assumption that Buddhist monks lived a settled lifestyle. This view is based on the belief that the monks’ way of life gradually shifted from one of travel and seclusion to one of communal living and stability with the introduction of the rain retreat. This, in turn, led to the development of the legal system and the organization of the monastic community. The idea can be traced back to Sukumar Dutt’s hypothesis from about 100 years ago, which was based on two adjacent monastic rules in the Senāsanakkhandhaka. One rule allowed monks to occupy a fixed dwelling place only during rain retreats, while the other allowed them to stay in a fixed location during a dry season. To reconcile the discrepancy between these two rules, Dutt proposed a historical transition from the former to the latter.
In this paper, I re-examined the two rules in detail and demonstrated that Dutt’s view is unreasonable and his hypothesis is dubious. Furthermore, I argued that monks are expected to lead a lifestyle that cannot be identified as either sedentary or itinerant. According to the Samantapāsādikā’s commentary on the rules, monks should move from place to place within a specific dwelling place during a dry season. This suggests that it is necessary to reconsider the validity of studying the Vinayapiṭaka on the premise of a settled lifestyle.
