内容記述 | Hangong qiu(Autumn in the Han Palace)漢宮秋 is one of the most famous pieces of Yuan drama, placed at the opening of Yuanqu xuan(Selection of Yuan Plays)元曲選 compiled in the Ming dynasty. It is based on the legend of Wang Zhaojun王昭君, a court lady of the Han dynasty who was forced to marry the khan of Xiongnu匈奴. According to the formal historical records, Wang Zhaojun did marry the khan and had children with him, although nobody knows whether she was happy. However, among the people, the marriage with the barbarian king of the northern land was often regarded as a great tragedy and brought about a variety of literature, including poetry, prose, and storytelling. Hangong qiu, in the form of drama, made the story more tragic. The author makes a comparative interpretation of this story and points out the originality of Hangong qiu. Compared with the legends before this drama, Mao Yanshou 毛延寿 in this play is portrayed as a much worse machiavellian who manipulates the mind of a mediocre and weak-minded emperor, Yuandi 元帝and made his attention away from political matters. Eventually, Mao puts a period on a happy short love affair with Yuandi and Wang Zhaojun and finally drives Zhaojun to commit suicide at the border of Han and the barbarian land. The protagonist of this drama is the emperor Yuandi. As the leading role, he sings all the arias, fully expressing his sentiment, but he cannot take any action. The most touching lyrics are in the Act 4, the scene after the departure of Wang Zhaojun to the northern land. In this scene, Yuandi is alone in the palace at night and suddenly hears a goose honk. A migrating goose who travels a long way, exhausted and lonely, effectively reflects the image of Wang Zhaojun. It makes Yuandi feel he is also similar to the honking goose. The utmost status of the emperor even more highlights his loneliness and powerlessness. Then, the drama comes to an end with a sad resonance. The author concludes that Hangong qiu enhanced the tragic theme by positioning the emperor as the sentimental protagonist, contrasting with the villain Mao. |
