内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This paper provides a detailed examination of Frederick Winslow Taylor’s principles of scientific management, focusing on the famous pig iron handling experiment conducted in 1899 at Bethlehem Steel Company. Taylor’s approach, often labeled as “Taylorism”, aimed to optimize labor productivity through scientific methods, such as time studies and the selection of workers based on their suitability for specific tasks. The experiment is presented as a cornerstone of Taylorism, demonstrating how scientific management can dramatically increase efficiency.
However, several researchers argue that the experiment’s details were exaggerated or even fabricated. The most well-known one, Wrege and Perroni’s « Taylor’s Pig-Tale: A Historical Analysis of Frederick W. Taylor’s Pig-Iron Experiments », highlights discrepancies between Taylor’s account and the original records from Bethlehem Steel Company, such as the amount of pig iron stock and concludes that Taylor’s methodology was less scientific than he claimed, lacking the necessary rigor and replicability to qualify as true scientific research. In this context, Matthew Stuart claims in The Management Myth that Taylor was being dogmatic.
But we try to delve into this word, « dogma ». According to Pierre Legendre, a legal historian and psychoanalyst in France, dogma has two sides in its semantic dimension: one implies axiom or decision, and the other means aesthetic. To establish its authenticity, every institution, every system needs dogma, and management is no exception. From this point of view, Taylor’s pig iron handling experiment appears not only as a case study but as an inaugural discourse of scientific management. As Legendre says, behaving rationally presupposes faith in rationality, and this faith is formed irrationally. Therefore, Taylor’s anecdote should not be dismissed on the grounds that it is unscientific but should be examined in terms of how it works with its mythological features. This would draw attention to Taylor’s theatricality and the reception of his story.
In summary, this paper departs from the pig iron episode and aims to sketch another history of management thought, which relates to both physical and affective dimensions.
