| 内容記述 | In his Japanese book on Early Buddhism published in 1922, Kimura Taiken 木 村泰賢, a scholar of Indian and Buddhist Studies at the Imperial University of Tokyo, hypothesized that those parts of the Āgama and Vinaya which are common to the various Buddhist monastic groups date back to the age of or prior to King Aśoka (re. c. 268-232 BCE), whereas those which are specific to each were added thereafter. This theory, which was based on the historical assumption that a fundamental schism occurred to Buddhism during the reign of King Aśoka, had been adopted through 20th century by the following Japanese scholars, Ui Hakuju 宇井 伯寿, Akanuma Chizen 赤沼智善, Mizuno Kogen 水野弘元, Nakamura Hajime 中 村元, Maeda Egaku 前田恵学, Hirakawa Akira 平川彰, Sato Mitsuo 佐藤密雄, and so forth. In the West, however, an increasing number of scholars such as Gregory Schopen have expressed skepticism toward the hypothesis. Such a situation therefore calls for a reexamination of Buddhism during the Aśokan period. Despite an extremely large number of studies on King Aśoka, no one has ever discussed the above issues using his epigraphical and archaeological sources. In this article, I will first describe the key traits ascribed to Buddhism in the 3rd century BCE by the Aśokan Inscriptions and archaeological materials. Second, I will examine whether these can be recognized in the parts of the Āgama and Vinaya literatures held common by the five monastic groups, that is, Mahāsāṅghika, Theriya, Dharmaguptaka, Sarvāstivāda, and Mahīśāsaka (or Sāmmitīya). The purpose is to shed a new light on Early Buddhism by forming the basis for fresh comparison of the epigraphical and archaeological materials of the third century BCE and the Buddhist texts belonging to these five monastic groups. | |||||||||
