With the progress of globalization, the educational model of each country is being ‘borrowed’ across national borders. It is said that Japan’s lesson study, the translation of jugyo-kenkyu, is one of the educational models in Japan that has been ‘borrowed’ abroad. In this study, we focus on research lesson study (RLS) developed by Peter Dudley since the 200s in England, U.L., and explore the following two questions, (1) how RLS, a variant of LS, has been widely developed and introduces into school reform with great effects up to-date, i.e., historical and political backgrounds; (2) what the features of RLS are. From the examination of the relevant literatures including the RLS Handbook (Dudley, 2019), and Dudley’s own reflections in interviews, we can be clear that (1) the development of RLS has its origins in Dudley’s efforts to improve classroom learning as a former school teacher whose view of practice development was transformed by participating in a sequence of research lessons in the mid-1980s, (2) the implementation and development of RLS in England has been influenced by changes in the education policies of successive governments, and (3) in RLS, teachers collaborate in a sequence of research lessons, predict and observe the learning of ‘case pupils;' conduct post-lesson interviews with pupils in order to again deep understandings of the needs of learners, as well as to reveal the tacit knowledge of teachers. Finally, based on the above findings, implications of RLS for jyugyo-kenkyu in Japan are oresented. |
