| 内容記述 | 本論考では，戦間期におけるイングランド銀行の諸政策の中でも最も特徴的な活動と言われる同行の産業介入について，その端緒となったアームストロング社への介入に焦点を当てて再検討する．特に，本論考では従来の研究で着目されてこなかった商業銀行業務との連続性と，同時代英国における「産業合理化」運動との関連性という観点から評価する．これらの新たな視点から考察した結果として，アームストロング社への介入において以下の事実が指摘される．第一に，アームストロング社への介入にあたって，イングランド銀行は商業銀行業務の延長線上にある方針として，民間企業としての収益性，競争力を重視して同社を再編していた．第二に，イングランド銀行のアームストロング社への介入にあたって，「産業合理化」という同時代に流行した議論はその初期から一貫して重要視されていた．「産業合理化」を重視した結果として，イングランド銀行はアームストロング社を，特に兵器業界と鉄鋼業界においては，各産業においてプレイヤーの数を減らす業界再編に重きを置いた形で再編していた． | |||||||||

| 内容記述 | This paper revisits the Bank of England’s industrial intervention in the interwar years, focusing on theBank’s intervention in the Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth Co., whose case could be regarded as a‘natural experiment’ on the Bank’s engagement with the comprehensive reorganisation of an industry.It examines the intervention from the perspective of continuity between the industrial interventionand the Bank’s branch bank business. Moreover, this study explores the influence of contemporarydebates on‘ rationalisation’ on the Bank’s industrial intervention. This study reveals that the Bank’sreorganisation schemes were based on the competitiveness and profitability of each business unit ofthe Armstrongs. Furthermore, its reconstruction strategies were heavily influenced by contemporarydiscussion on rationalisation which sought to regulate competition by eliminating redundant capacity.Finally, there was a continuity between the Bank’s commercial businesses conducted in its branches andthe Bank’s industrial intervention. | |||||||||
