| 内容記述 | "Festivals" have increased their significance as a space of public culture that can attract a large number of diverse audiences and create community-like interactions instantaneously in contemporary urban settings. This potential of the festival to appeal to and involve the larger public has thus drawn much interest of public cultural institutions which seek a new way of understanding a public sphere that should create and enhance democratic discussion and dialogue among citizens. While the concept of "public culture" has emerged as a key term to organize scholarly attempts to rethink "culture" in closer relation to social issues and concerns, as well as to globalizing conditions, this paper explores the festival as a mode of public culture, focusing on the ways in which it has developed within a specific socio-historical and political context of the United Sates. The analysis particularly pays attention to the Smithsonian Folk Festival, one of the most influential, large-scale, public events at the nation's capital, looking into its genealogical relation to the vernacular history of a "folk festival," with regard to cultural policy and social movements. | |||||
