内容記述 | Peng Jiannan, a mid-Qing playwright (fl. late 18th to early 19th century) wrote two dramas, Yingmei an and Xiangwan lou, based on Mao Xiang’s Yingmei an yiyu(Reminiscences of the Convent of Shadowy Plum-Blossoms) and Chen Peizhi’s Xiangwan lou yiyu(Reminiscences of the Tower of Fragrant Field), respectively. Yingmei an yiyu is the memoirs of Mao Xiang about his concubine Dong Xiaowan who died an early death in 1651, and Xiangwan lou yiyu is a book of the same nature written by Chen Peizhi in memory of his concubine Wang Zixiang who died at the age of twenty-two in 1824. Both Dong Xiaowan and Wang Zixiang had initially been courtesans in Qinhuai pleasure quarters in Nanjing before marriage. Peng Jiannan dramatized the two famous works of “memoir literature” of the Qing dynasty. Peng Jiannan wrote Xiangwan lou at the request of Chen Peizhi. Both men were associated with a literary coterie, headed by Chen’s father Chen Wenshu, who, like Yuan Mei, was famous for tutoring many female students in poetry. Female poets involved in the same circle included Chen’s mother, wife, concubines, sisters, and a better known poet Xi Peilan (student of Yuan Mei). Records also mention male participants like Gai Qi (painter of The Illustration and Poems on Hongloumeng) and Guo Lin (famous for his romantic style). Peng Jiannan may have composed the two plays, Yingmei an and Xiangwan lou, out of respect for talented women as well as his sympathy for the women’s tragic fate, which was common among his literary coterie. Meanwhile, both works may also reflect nostalgia in late Qing for the earlier periods. | |||||
