内容記述 | This article tries to examine the debate on the Tibetan polyandry. While doing so, the author will shed new light on the mode of explanation of anthropological thought and give a reflection on the study of kinship at the same time. Polyandry is a kind of marriage form which one wife marries plural husbands simultaneously. In addition, almost all of polyandries in Tibet are fraternal. Fraternal polyandry means the marriage where brothers share a wife. There were several debates on this rarely found marriage form in Tibetan Studies. By giving a glace at previous studies, the article focus on the debate known as “culture vs. socio-economic scheme debate” which was held by Melvyn C.Goldstein and Paljor at one side, while Nancy Levine on the other. Goldstein and Paljor claim that the reason and logic beneath the Tibetan Polyandry is socio-economic one, while Levine states cultural. However, the analysis of the debate finds both viewpoints are not mutual exclusive, but rather supplemental to each others. The article also shows that pragmatic choice, which was suggested by socio-economic theorists, will only happens when there will be moral supports which affords the alternative itself, say, fraternal polyandry in this context. The author further suggests that the reflection on this debate will be a great contribution to the anthropological study of kinship which were often said once declined. The debate clearly shows two classical viewpoints of social science. The first one is the view that regard society as a sum of rules,while another will consider it as a sum of actions. The paper concludes that we need to change our understanding of society from rules to actions. | |||||
