内容記述 | As the territory of Chin (晉) State in Spring and Autmn Period was ex-tended, the number of hsien (縣) s or great yi (邑) s, which several great clans, some of whose heads would become the king in the Waring States Period, ruled, was incresed. In this paper, I examine how Chao-meng, who was one of the heads of great clans above, ruled his hsiens or great yiS.Shih (室) means goods, yi, or field in “Ch‘un-ch'iu-Tso-shih-Chuan 春秋左氏傅” In my consideration, the shih in the third grouP of “Hou-ma-Meng-shu侯馬盟書, the‘Alliance Pacts' unearthed at Hou-ma” ,means a field attach-ed to hsiang (郷).Compared with the fact that the number of hsiens or great yis under Chao clan (趙氏) is about ten, the number of members whose shihs were prohibitted from being enlarged and possessed is at least 58; themembers above swore to hinder “tsung-jen (宗人)” or “hsiung-ti (兄弟)” from enlarging or possessing shih ; though the members belong to a particular class, their connections with Chao-meng in words and phrases of the “Hou-ma-Meng-shu” are the same in every instance.Only chao-meng is the ab-solute being in words and phrases in the pacts, so he must be the man who prohibits the participants of the alliance ceremony from enlarging or possess-ing shih.Shih of a yi-magistrate can mean his yi, but under it, there are shihs which Chao-meng-controles, so Shih of a yi-magistrate in that meaning has a sense of movable property.Under Chao-meng, there must have been no magistrate of hsien or great yi who rules his hsien or great yi as a heredi-tary and immovable estate.Up to now, there has been a strong belief that the time when hsien ruler were denied their hereditary rule was during the Waring States Period, but according to my exemination in this paper, that time must be, at the latest, the first half of the fifth century B.
