内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In my first paper I dealt with the defintion and function of the so-called `large-scale houses' (Ogata jukyo) of the Jomon period. My approach was to begin by distinguishing the dwellings by size alone, and then to proceed to considerations of their character. As a result, I hypothesized that the buildings functioned as a communal dining place for ritual feasts held by the members of certain social groups in order to strengthen group unity. In reaction to this theory some opinions have been put forward by M. Sugaya and others. This present paper is written as an answer to these criticisms, particularly those of Sugaya, as well as to provide a prospectus for further analysis and consideration. Sugaya is of the opinion that previous arguments about Ogata-jukyo have taken a basi-cally wrong course. In analysing all types of houses, Sugaya presented the idea of `hearth space' (ro-kzckan), meaning the area around a fire place surrounded by post holes. Applying this concept, he attempted to classify houses into three categories: single-unit type, multi-unit type and null-unit type. Mufti-units were used for multiple dwellings and null-units were used for some other purpose because most ordinary houses have only one hearth space. In the present article I point out that Sugaya's theory of hearth-space is wholly dependent on the as yet unproved premise that ordinary 'houses' were for dwelling use only. After reference to Sugaya's other criticisms, I review opinions on classification and function by other archaeologists, and finally present a perspective for the spatial analysis of Ogata-jukyo using a classification based on the layout of post holes and hearths.
