内容記述 | The teacher's status in Japanese society was generally high in the early Meiji era. But, political restraints and poor pay gradually made it decline from the middle of the Meiji era. As the school system and teachers' professionalism were established, contrary to expectation. teachers tended to become demoralized. In this situation, Hyakusuke Hoshina (1868-1911) undertook various educational activities to raise the morale of persons involved in education in Nagano Prefecture. He was an elementary school teacher, a scholar of geology and mineralogy, and a collector of stones and minerals in Nagano Prefecture (distributing many specimen boxes to schools). He also founded a library and a private school for poor youth, published a newspaper, and furthermore twice stood for the House of Representatives. He was a man belonging to the tradition of high minded person who were well-versed in Chinese classical literature. At the same time, he was famous for episodes of eccentric behavior. In spite of criticism from educational bureaucrats, this idiosyncratic educator who wrote comic tankas (poems) came to be loved by many people. This paper describes his sincerity and enthusiasm in the quest for educational truth, and tries to place him in the context of the history of educators in modern Japan. | |||||
