内容記述 | This paper aims to clarify differences between Neo-Confucianism and the thought of Yamazaki Ansai (1619-1682), who made it his principle that his own interpretation of Confucian teachings should never be added to School of Neo-Confucianism but that he would only introduce the original doctrines formulated by Chu Hsi and other major Confucians (“Nobe te Tsukurazu”). This rigid adherence to Chu Hsi logically means that all people can inherently achieve a state which is acknowledged to be supreme and which therefore leads to a negation of secret transmission (“Hiden”), for Hiden conversely means that only a limited number of people can achieve such a state. In this paper, I will first indicate in Ansai’s thought an orientation contrary to his own principle as well as the negation of secret transmission, which might be understood as the particularistic orientation against the universal perceived in “Nobete Tsukurazu”. The main task of this paper will be to indicate how Ansai’s particularism was created by referring to his basic idea of “mind god” (“Shin-Shin”). Lastly, from the perspective of the sociology of religion, I will attempt to elucidate the social context behind the formation of Ansai’s particularism, paying close attention to those who accepted his thought, the position of Neo-Confucianism in Japan at that time, and what difference lay between their religious sentiments. | |||||
