| 内容記述 | Recently, there is increasing interest in theories that explain religious phenomena “scientifically” in the academic field. Furthermore, books applying this method have been published with considerable frequency. In this context, this article not only mentions these “scientific explanations of religious phenomena” but also investigates their backgrounds in order to answer the question of why such studies are being actively pursued. In a field of Cognitive Science, I survey Ilkka Pyysiäinen’s “counter-intuitive” theory. From Evolutionary Biology, I present Edward Wilson’s idea that regards religions as “human nature.” Considering the connection between both disciplines, I elucidate that three gaps have been overcome: that is, gaps between mind and material, human and animal, and humanities and natural sciences. These studies can be interpreted as a reflection of this inter-disciplinary movement. Moreover, after critically examining previous works, I provide a new scheme that sees this situation as “replacing explanatory language,” for understanding these theories. I furthermore suggest comparing them with existing theories in Religious Studies as a proposal for future research. Given that one of the novelties of these theories consists in the point that they are “scientific,” comparing them with past theories makes it possible to properly evaluate the “scientific explanation of religious phenomena.” | |||||
