内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Francis Bacon (1561-1626) is best known for his promotion of natural philosophy, and that his writings are wrought with religious overtones is commonly acknowledged. But why did he present his promotion of science in a religious manner, and why did he assign sacred purpose to his studies of nature? Having lived through the age of sectarian turmoil following the Reformation, Bacon was keenly aware of the doctrinal and institutional problems surrounding the Church of England, as evidenced in his Advertisement Touching the Controversy of the Church of England (1589) and Essays (1625). In these works, he analyzes the character of the religious problems he observed, and by doing so reveals his religious ideal of a transcendent unity of the christian church, envisaged against the reality of its separations and disruptions. I argue that Bacon set out to achieve this ideal of unity through the philosophical pursuit of nature, as a viable alternative to theological endeavors based on divine revelation. Since nature for Bacon was an obvious manifestation of God's power, the confirmation of that force through studies of nature was potentially a way to approach God, and at the same time, a means of resolving disputes arising from an excessive reliance upon revelatory interpretations. In the name of natural philosophy, he frames what is essentially for him a religious endeavor, where one is to start from the collection of numerous observed facts in natural history, and virtually work one's way up through physics and metaphysics in making further generalizations, to finally reach the "summary law of nature" at the apex of a pyramidal structure. The religious character of this "summary law of nature" will be examined through the analysis of ethical qualities he assigned to other "laws of nature," and secondly, through his discussion on how such an axiomatic truth might be attained. I will make reference to his theological concept of "ladder" positioned between God and Creation, as it appears in his Confession of Faith, to support my argument of his belief in the existence of what he otherwise called a 'supreme'law of nature.
