内容記述 | Luis de Leon (1528-91), a famous theologian, Hebraist, and poet in Golden Age Spain, is also one of the representative figures of so-called Spanish mysticism. In the introductory chapter of his masterpiece, De Nombres de Cristo, he exposes in a succinct but very dense manner his original understanding of the nature of the "name" in general, as well as the divine names. In this article I carefully analyze his systematic arguments on Christ's names in that chapter of his work, and try to make clear the essentially "linguistic" nature of his mystical thought. Compared with contemporary mystical trends - such as that of Teresa de Avila, which is characterized by ecstatic mystical experiences ; or that of Ignatian mysticism, which can be called the mysticism of insatiable action ; or the neo-platonistic negative theology that negates all linguistic expression of the divine - Luis de Leon's mystical thought is distinguished by his deep confidence and love of language, especially Biblical language. This is because reality itself is linguistic for him. The names of things are in a sense identical with the things themselves, and so are the names of God. Thus the way that leads the human soul to her perfection, that is, to resemble or draw near to God as far as possible, is to study the whole Bible and discover the infinitely abundant significations each "name of Christ" implicitly contains. His theological thought moves within the element of language from the beginning to the end : it begins from philological research of the Biblical language and reaches its completion as a kind of poetic exegesis that mystically aspires the God who is conceived of as the "name" in the deepest sense. | |||||
