内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This article examines the transformation of Uemura Masahisa's views on religion. In 1880, Uemura wrote "shukyoron (Theory of Religion)," in which he set out three claims. First, that humankind naturally requires religion. Second, that though "advanced" civilizations may criticize religion, "true" religion is necessarily harmonious with civilization. Third, that Japan should accept Christianity as the world's only true faith. Through these claims, Uemura sought to defend Christianity against such trends as Evolutionism that criticized Christianity as being contrary to modern civilization. At that time, Uemura envisioned the West as being an ideal civilization that practiced Christianity in its purest form. This Utopian view served to legitimize his claims, authenticating Christianity and dismissing other religions as "uncivilized." Around 1890, however, two crises occurred. Firstly, upon travelling to America and England, he encounted the reality of the West, and was deluded. By virtue of this experience, were tempered his views on the relationship between Christianity and the West. Secondly, some denominations of liberal Protestantism entered Japan around the same time. These groups insisted on questioning the historical authority of Christianity, thus encouraging Japanese Christians to re-evaluate Japanese tradition and to reinterpret Christianity within a Japanese cultural context. Returning to Japan in 1890, Uemura wrote "shukyo no shinka wo bensuru no hydjun (On the Criteria for Evaluating Religions)." In this work he defined religion as linked to the relationship between humankind and a supernatural "persona," and that every religion must be viewed as intrinsically worthy. While there were differences to be found between religions, evaluation of individual religions was to be based on the "truth" to be found in the religions themselves, not by referring to their nations of origin or their numbers of believers. Through positing a universality of religious nature, Uemura maintained that Japan could adopt Christianity due to its own inherent value as a universally acceptable faith. In this paper, I will analyze the differences between the two works described above. While Uemura described religion as related to civilization in his earlier work, in his later writings he came to characterize religion as existing in the realm of the transcendental. This transition serves as an example of the manner in which religion was perceived and how Christianity was re-interpreted during the process of the formation of the concept of "shukyo (religion)" in modern Japan.
