内容記述 | More than a century has passed since Japanese religions started propagation in foreign cultures. While some Japanese religions have been accepted chiefly by Japanese diaspora, other religions, such as Soka Gakkai, Perfect Liberty, and Messianity, which is the religion that I study in this article, have succeeded in going beyond the ethnic barrier. Once accepted in a foreign culture, a religion faces identity problems ; the more it is accepted by non ethnic Japanese people, the more the Japaneseness of the religion may fade. The Church of World Messianity of Brazil, a Japanese new religion that has been propagated in Brazil since 1956, currently has 300,000 followers and over 95% of them are non-ethnic Japanese. In 1971, Messianity started an education system goal of which is to bring up gifted young elite who will be leaders of the religion in future. The system got off the ground in the 1980s and young eager followers all over Brazil applied to become seminalista, who study at the headquarters in Sao Paulo for two years. In Sao Paulo, they keep face to face contact with Japanese executives and have to study doctrine, Japanese and Ikebana. Those who pass final examination go to Japan to study Japanese culture and propagate in Japan. As ex and current seminalista point out, they learn not only doctrine but Japanese culture and ways of thinking by staying with Japanese executives in Sao Paulo and in Japan. By means of this effective system, Messianity's trial to maintain Japaneseness has succeeded so far. | |||||
