内容記述 | Roman Emperor Julian (reign 361-363) sought the 'restoration of religion'based on the system of 'Greco-Roman urban rites'. His plan aimed at the restoration of ethics, and he emphasized the high value of piety(eusebeia) as a duty for people, who were benevolent to fellow citizens as 'zon politikon'and protected by merciful gods. He claimed the importance of rites as a visible means of communication between human beings and gods to confirm the 'do-ut-des'relationship. The ideal religious-festive place was planned for all human beings who enjoy equality before the gods. It required such factors as, well-ordered sanctuaries in silence and perfect tidiness, performance of daily and festival-calendar-oriented ritual activity (e.g. sacrifice or offering of incense, etc) and chaste hymns which bring about 'internal piety'. Priests were expected to be the example of 'piety'as intermediatores between people and gods. Though the princile of the plan was co-existence of various religiosities, any phenomena which harmed 'piety'were strictly criticized. For example, ordinary festive places (theaters of hippodromes) and festive dances and banquets were criticized as 'defiled'because they brought about amusement in spite of their festive origins. The distinctive feature of Julian's plan was that it was neither hostile to Christianity, nor sympathetic to ordinary 'paganism'which allowed various vulgar phenomena. | |||||
