The behavior among youths in their transition from school to work looks as if shifting from the traditional pattern. Similar transformation can be found in the United States for the 1970\u0027s and 1980\u0027s. From this perspective this paper analyzed the changes in the United States based on the High School and Beyond Data. The analyses found the following : (1) The \u0027regular\u0027behavioral pattern of transition-enroll in college right after graduation from high school, graduate the college in four years, and enter job market-became increasingly less common in the 1970s. The proportion of the youths deviating from this pattern, and frequently come back later, became increased substantially. (2) Despite the common belief, the expansion of the latter, or \u0027irregular\u0027pattern of transition, can not be attributed to the increases in non-traditional, or \"involuntary\" students in higher education institutions.
