A precise mercury thermometer (0.1°C/div.) has been used conventjonally for this purpose. Recent progress in an observational system has needed more precjse knowledge about the temperature changes in a vault for satisfactory correction of the data. Basically, a vault is subject to temperature changes by two principal causes, heat conduction from the surface and the air flow through the entrance. In the first case, the underground temperature is a function of the depth from the ground surface. In a vault which is excavated in a mountain slope, therefore, the temperature is not uniform to all its extension, being subject to relatively large seasonal changes in a shallower part.
