The device is a digital self-recording instrument, utilizing CMOS RAM (Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor Random Access Memory). The device, therefore, requires no mechanical parts for recording. This made the instrument particularly suitable for use under severe mechanical handling during DSDP-type operations. A bead type thermistor sensor is attached to the device housed in a pressure case which is lowered in the hole by a wire.
