| 内容記述 | Ishikawa Jun's debut work "Kajin" (1935) tells the story of Watashi, an aspiring writer who, trapped within the confines of self-consciousness, longs to transcend himself and his world. The story begins with Watashi's description of his search for "the omphalos" (heso), a kind of metaphoric axis mundi that he feels compelled to locate. His search comes to an abrupt end when he realizes that the world is without any center. A quasi-religious epiphany in the next scene causes him to realize that he too lacks any center or core: "I am a mere void [...] Filled only with nothingness." This new knowledge compels him to embark upon a kind of "disappearing act," whereby he attempts to reduce himself to pure cogito or consciousness, with the ultimate goal of reaching a state of nonexistence. After his failed suicide attempt, however, he is suddenly transformed into a kind of pure living being or "wild beast" that immediately tracks down his wife's sister, ultimately ravishing her. Watashi abruptly ends his narrative with a confession that he has long suffered from a condition "known to the ancients as nympholepsy," which is produced and perpetuated by the goat-god Pan who apparently "possesses" him. In this paper I will explore these two themes of "possession" and "nympholepsy," and show how they relate both to Watashi's quest for self- and world-transcendence and to the narrative act itself. | |||||
