内容記述 | This paper aims to describe the socio-cultural situation in the former Yugoslavia in the 1960s through a survey of contemporary Yugoslav animated films. Zagreb Film, a school of animated filmmaking which had enormous influence on the methodology of animation-making in general, is known for its pointed satirical themes. Still, it seldom showed any interest in either multicultural Yugoslavism or mono-cultural ethno-centrism, which had been accelerated since the beginning of the 1960s and which ushered in the breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. Rather, their animated films illustrate the challenge of operating among several grand narratives (including Yugoslavism, nationalism, ethno-centrism, communism, and capitalism) without promoting any of them. The main subject of analysis is the narrative / figurative strategies of three animated films from Zagreb Film: Substitute(Surogat, 1961)by Dušan Vukotić; Don Quixote (Don Kihot, 1961) by Vlado Kristl; and Passing Days (Idu dani, 1968) by Nedeljko Dragić. These films reveal the tragedy of the "little man" who is rattled by a plurality of ideologies and is obsessed with the ideology about ideology -- specifically, how everyone has to choose the ideology to which he or she belongs. These films and many other animated films of Zagreb Film reveal the social inclination that persisted throughout the history of the former Yugoslavian region, wherein symbols and signs were excessively burdened with historical meaning. These animated films were not attempts to affect the politics of their contemporary society; rather, they succeeded in abstracting the difficulties of living in a modern civilized society from the political and cultural realities of the former Yugoslav region. | |||||
