内容記述 | Croatian identity politics, especially after Croatia's independence from the former Yugoslavia, has focused on developing the self-image of a country from western Europe, not from the Balkans. Nostalgic stories about the Croatian kingdom and the Europe to which Croatia belongs are being created, exhibited and consumed in Croatia today, displacing and eliminating the heritage of the Balkans, the tragedy of the independence war, and the history of Yugoslavia. Croatian contemporary artists, however, are trying to resist this collective "amnesia". Contemporary art in post-communist Europe generally tries to form relationships with its social background. Croatian contemporary art is thus characterized by the tendency to mount performances and exhibitions that are so tiny, modest and personal that people hardly notice them. Their works problematise the new self-image of Croatia by exaggerating the tininess of performances, a strategy that paradoxically shows the grandness of the national narrative. While the grand narrative deploys the people into the spectacle, applauds the victory in the independence war, and creates a homogeneous Croatian history and culture, artists try to stress the war's meaninglessness, and the heterogeneousness and discontinuity in Croatia's history and culture. This paper analytically compares the attitude of the national cultural industry with artistic performances and works by several artists in Croatia, focusing on three mutually related topics: the concept of "Balkan", the memory of the war and the view of a cultural heritage which doesn't fit into the "homogeneous" history of Croatia. | |||||
