| 内容記述 | Building on Ito’s (2010a,b) null operator movement analysis, this paper discusses the syntax and semantics of long-distance reflexives (LDRs) focusing on their property of obligatory de se construal. I propose that LDRs’ property of obligatory de se construal falls out naturally from the interaction of a null operator movement and a semantic condition imposed by LDRs. Specifically, it is argued (i) that the null operator movement creates a lambda-abstract with an individual variable and provides a value for that variable by the null operator being bound by a local subject and (ii) that LDRs impose a condition that the relevant attitude holder has an “I” or “you”-thought. Some consequences of the proposed account for the Blocking Effect in Chinese are also addressed, with implications for the phase-based dynamic derivational model and the syntax-discourse interface. | |||||
