内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In the Noh play Yōrō, thought to have been written by Zeami, an imperial messenger has been dispatched to Mino Province far from the capital because of rumors of a mysterious spring. He interviews the father and son who discovered the spring and listens to their description of the auspiciousness of the spring's water. Later, the local mountain deity appears and praises the reign of Emperor Yūryaku, in which such auspicious water wells up from below. While the old father says that one feels extremely elated when drinking water from this mysterious spring that has appeared near a waterfall called Yōrō and it certainly has the effect of "alleviating old age," he points out that this does not mean that drinking from the spring prolongs one's life span, makes one young again, or turns one into an immortal. The water from this spring is extremely pure, and upon drinking it, the hearts of people are also purified from the hardship of old age. The purity of the water affects all aspects of people's lives, although it cannot stop the process of growing old itself. In this story, this water also symbolizes the relationship between the emperor and the people. When the upper stream, standing in for the ruler of the realm, is pure, then the people, portrayed as the lower stream, can have their hearts purified, their spirits lifted, and live fulfilled lives. In the play, all these effects are expressed using the homophone verb sumu in combination with different Chinese characters to express this interwoven relationship. Behind the people of the realm and nature as such looms the presence of the emperor and everyone lives because of his grace. By becoming aware of this cosmological structure, the people gain the ability to locate themselves within this world and live content lives. This does not mean that their lives become liberated from the hardships of life, but Yōrō rather serves to transmit Zeami's own worldview and philosophy that by being able to locate oneself in this world, one experiences closure and emotional relieve.
