| 内容記述 | 本稿はSV＋for all sb knowsに関して以下の6つの特徴を指摘する（ただしSVは主節，sbはsomebodyの略で人間を指す名詞のこと）。(1) SV＋for all sb knowsは多義であり，「sbは，知識・情報を十分に持っていないので，SVで提示された命題が真である可能性を否定できない」と解釈するべき場合と，「sbは，SVで提示された命題が真である可能性を否定できないほど知識・情報不足である」と解釈するべき場合（およびどちらと解釈しても大差ない場合）がある。(2) SVが法助動詞が含まれていなくてもSVは推量や可能性という概念と結び付けられて解釈される（断定の文とは解釈されない）。(3) 話し手が発話の妥当性を確認・検証することに無関心であるというニュアンスを伴う。(4) 文内の位置としてはfor all sb knowsがSVに先行するのが最も高頻度である。(5) sb にはたいてい一人称代名詞（特にI）が来る。(6) 口語的な文体で用いられることが多いものの，話し手が発話の妥当性の検証に無関心であることが許される文脈であれば，学術論文のなかで使うことも可能である。さらに本稿は，for all sb knowsと他のfor all表現，all表現，for表現との関連について考察し，for all sb knowsが英語の体系のなかで他と完全に切り離された「離れ小島」のようにはなっていないこと—動機付けられていること—を指摘する。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | The present paper reveals six characteristics of for all somebody (henceforth, sb) knows. (1) A sentence including for all sb knows is potentially ambiguous between two interpretations: ‘since sb does not possess much relevant knowledge or information, they cannot dismiss the possibility that the proposition in the main clause is true’ and ‘sb knows so little that they cannot dismiss the possibility of the main clause proposition being true.’ Context helps determine the interpretation, but sometimes one and the same sentence can be interpreted in either way without being incongruent with the surrounding context. (2) The interpretation of a sentence including for all sb knows involves the concept of inference or possibility (i.e., it does not sound like an assertive sentence) even when the main clause does not contain any modal auxiliaries. (3) For all sb knows makes the sentence sound like a casual chance remark made by a speaker who is not interested in validating their statement. (4) For all sb knows favors clause-initial position over medial or final position. (5) The sb slot is in most cases filled by a first person pronoun (most frequently I). (6) For all sb knows is for the most part used in an informal style. It is possible however to use it in a formal style, even in academic writing, provided the context allows one to make a noncommittal statement. The present article further discusses the relations between for all sb knows, on the one hand, and other for all expressions, all expressions and for expressions, on the other, and concludes that for all sb knows is not completely isolated from the rest of the language; it is ‘motivated’. | |||||
