内容記述 Japan is accepting more international students to study at Japanese Universities, Colleges, and Japanese language schools. The Japanese government and university foundations give a certain degree of monetary support for daily expenses; however, current mental health support remains an issue of concern. There does exist mental health support for international students at some universities and colleges, but this support is almost nonexistent at Japanese language schools. In order to provide appropriate support, it is essential to understand the needs international students have at different phases of their study in Japan. This paper investigated the need-based support of Chinese international students studying at Japanese language schools. Four groups of Chinese international students (N=19) were interviewed. They were divided by length of stay (2 groups each for shorter than 3 months or longer than 6 months) . Data were collected via focus group interviews and were analyzed qualitatively. Results showed that students’ support needs changed according to the length of their stay in Japan. Results also revealed that, if some of the problems such as lack of correct information and little support for entering universities were not solved sufficiently early, the problems would get more severe and might lead to further problems. Results also suggest the necessity of support for international students starting early in their studies at Japanese language schools. At the same time, support must match changes in their needs.
