| 内容記述 | This paper begins by reviewing the debate over the roots of modern typography and shifts emphasis from the modern art movement in the 1920s to the Scientific Revolution at around 1700. Given the focus on the intellectual biography of Joseph Moxon (1627-91), printer, cartographer, maker of globes, and an early Fellow of the Royal Society, this paper surveys the philosophical sources, such as Francis Bacon, John Dee and Robert Hooke, that have an influence on the rise of modern attitudes toward typography appeared in the preface to Moxon’s Mechanick Exercises (1683-84) which is known as one of the earliest printing manuals. | |||||
