| 内容記述 | The Sanskrit term brahmacārín-, literally “one who is working on the bráhman,” is attested since the early stage of the Vedic literature in ancient India. Since it includes the word bráhman, one of the most important ideas in the Vedic religion, it must have represented a figure important to the Vedic culture. Generally, the term brahmacārín means “the Vedic student,” who learns the Vedic canon from his teacher. This meaning is attested since the early stage of the Veda. In addition, especially since the middle stage of the Veda, this term sometimes means “one who is keeping chastity; be chaste.” The problem is that the latter meaning can be applied to those who are not the Vedic students, or even to the people who have nothing to do with the Veda-learning. This paper examines comprehensively the usages of the term brahmacārín in the Vedic literature in order to clarify how the above two meanings have developed. The key is that the Vedic student is required to lead an ascetic life. And, one whoever is going to learn something cryptic, or is going to be pure, is required to behave like the Vedic student temporarily, even if he is not a Vedic student proper. |
